Traveling with Toddler

Toddlers are great fun when constantly stimulated. The idea of a long journey traveling with toddler sends shivers down the spine of most parents.

So what do the clever parents do to overcome this unappealing endeavour? How do they keep their toddler amused and calm?

The key to a contented toddler on any journey is ensuring you have their basic needs fulfilled. Having a well packed travel bag is every parents most powerful tool when travelling with toddler.

If you do your best to have all your different tactics packed away in your toddler travel bag - you'll be prepared for anything!

Toddler By Plane

For specific information to flying with toddlers check out the air travel with toddlers page. For a wealth of information on air travel with children check out flying with children pages.

Toddler By Bus

More or less the same as flying with toddler. Key differences are (on the plus side) you are not confined during takeoff and landing. On the negative side, it’s more likely to cause motion sickness in your toddler. Check out how to combat travel sickness in children.

Toddler By Train

Just as with flying, your toddler is unlikely to experience motion sickness in a plane (though it is possible). However they are likely to experience ‘ants in their pants’. The great thing is there is fold down table space for drawing etc. If you’re really organised, you can book a seat with a whole table.

TOP TIP
Take pens/crayons in a pot with a lid so they don’t roll off down the train.

Don’t forget to include trips to the loo as part of your attention span repertoire – tedious as a parent, but so much fun as a toddler.

Toddler By Car

What NOT to do - when traveling with toddler

Don’t take foods containing E numbers or loads of obvious colouring/flavouring.

Don’t try out a sedative for the first time on the journey – it could have the opposite effect.

Don’t expect great things such as time to read your book – travel with a toddler can be hard, tiring work that requires loads of patience and interaction.

Don’t worry if you have to wing it – just about everything you need for a toddler is available at corner stores. Sometimes having to make do provides us with surprisingly positive outcomes.
