Playing free car games is such a lovely part of growing up. There are plenty of simple driving games you can play, for all ages.These days we are bombarded with technology. And whilst its an easy, convenient option to opt for an in car DVD player or to let your children play handheld games to occupy their attention, its not the only option. Communication is golden and extremely precious and driving can be an ideal time to make the most of it. Kids thrive on adult attention. They also love to copy, so if you sound tired and frustrated, it will likely come back at you. Be as encouraging as possible…you’re bound to have fun!
Free Car Games to Play
- Count the cars
Great free car game for very young children. Simply choose a colour and count the number of cars that go past in the opposite direction of that colour. Adapt for the environment, count all the cars if you’re somewhere remote. When you reach a pre-determined number, such as 20, change it to trucks, vans or a different colour. - Spot the Alphabet
Work your way through the letters of the alphabet. Each time someone spots something starting with the correct letter outside the car (i.e. A – aeroplane), you move to the next letter. If this game goes down well, the next time you play it, make it TWO things per letter before moving on. - License Plate Games
You can be creative with this one. You can either play a game with the numbers – my favourite is adding up the numbers to make a total number. Very good free car game for children learning to add. Or you can multiply them…this is a tough one! The other game is using the letters on the license plate. You need to name a person, word or phrase that contains (or if you’re really clever, that begins with) all the letters. - Memory
This is a nice driving game where you have to remember all that has been said and add some more. The first person says – I’m off on holiday and I’m taking….a hair brush’. The next person says ‘I’m off on holiday and I’m taking…a hair brush and a comb’.Each turn must list all the previous things and add one more. If you forget, you start again. This is very funny if someone adds something strange such as a chicken to the list…lots of giggles. - Once upon a time
Basically it’s a make a story game. You start with once upon a time and add a sentence each turn. This is great for little children who will love to finish your hanging sentences. You have to do most of the story building work, but you’ll laugh at what your children can come up with. - When I was young
Spend a little time recalling a fond memory you have of a journey when you were young. If you can’t remember all the nitty gritty, have some fun with it. Embellish your memory with harmless information (my favourite is the ‘when I was young, I had to walk 5 miles to school in the snow with no shoes! I had to stop and warm my feet in cow pats along the way – he he he’). It’s a lovely way to share your memories. - 21
This is a counting game for older children. You can only say up to 3 numbers in a row, less if you choose. For example you can choose to start with one, one two, or one two three. You cannot say ten and eleven together in a turn as they add to 21. The person who says 21 (or says ten and eleven together) loses. Example, the fwd slash divides each turn - 1,2,3 / 4,5,6 / 7,8,9 / 10 / 11, 12, 13, / 14, 15, 16, / 17, 18 / 19, 20 / 21 - you lose!
