Children Flying Unaccompanied Advice for Parents
Usually referred to as 'unaccompanied minor' by the airlines, children flying unaccompanied is something that requires careful planning. It can be a stressful concept to both parents and children, however many airlines have fantastic services available that help you feel confident that your child will get from A to B safely.
Things to consider for children travelling solo
- Age limits and flight connection restrictions for children flying unaccompanied vary between airlines so you MUST first check that the airline accepts your child’s age and your specific travel requirements.
- In general airlines allow children to fly unaccompanied between the ages 5yrs and 16yrs.
- A fee for the unaccompanied minor service almost always applies and in most cases cannot be booked online. It must be done either in person or on the phone.
- Documentation in the form of a declaration form will be required – which includes full details of the person dropping off the child and the person collecting the child at the destination. As well as relevant information about the child travelling.
- Many airlines provide an identifier for the child such as a cap or lanyard badge (which is like an id card worn round the neck – much like VIP pass) This helps staff identify the Unaccompanied Minor.
- After the adult has delivered the child to the airport and completed the check in process, the adult is required to remain at the airport until the airline has departed (for obvious reasons).
- The child should be accompanied at all times to and from the airplane - it is worth checking that this is the case when booking.
- On board the flight the child will be under the supervision of the crew.
