The Popular, Must Have, In Car DVD Player
Thinking of buying a Car DVD Player? There are all manner of gadgets available today to keep kids occupied in the car on long journeys. If you are a little adverse to you child becoming addicted to handheld video games, then the most obvious and certainly the most popular option is investing in a car DVD player. Hailed by many as being a ‘godsend’, these fab little movie players can turn a long boring car journey into an exciting cinematic event – magic!
So what exactly is a portable or in-car DVD player?
Quite simply, they are little DVD (movie) players that can either sit on your child’s lap, or be mounted up on the headrest (the latter is better to prevent your child from looking down, which can induce travel sickness). They play the DVD discs that you can buy from most supermarkets and have a battery life of approximately 2-4 hours (playing time). Many players will only play geographically (locally) compatible DVDs but multi region players are available. This means if you buy the player in the UK it might only play DVDs purchased in the UK or Europe (zone 2). Most car DVD players available today play standard DVD’s as well as music CDs, Written CDs (CD-R) and Rewritable CDs (CD-RW). At the top end, you’ll find that the machines are capable of MPEG4 and DivX compressed video – multiple media format capabilities. | Removing all the technical jargon, all this means is that you can download films off your computer, put them on a disc and ‘hey presto’ a new movie for the next long car journey. In my opinion, the more functionality in this area, the better. |
They are made by all the usual suspects, Sony, Panasonic, Pioneer etc. Expect to pay around £150 for a good quality multiple function player. They range in price from around £60 for the most basic player to £450 for the top of the range all bells and whistles player.

Choosing a good quality player is really important. We have purchased two cheap players in quick succession – both failed very quickly in one way or another and consequently we just gave up on replacing them. Instead, we now use an ipod as our Car DVD Player subsitute.
