Booster Seats & Car Seats what if my car has Lap Belts?
Fitting booster seats or child car seats into the rear of a sports car with only lap belts presents a problem. The department for transport states that a child is not exempt from using a child restraint in a seat with only a lap belt. Many older sports cars came with only lap belts in the rear. With the constantly evolving, tighter safety restrictions, manufacturers no longer consider lap belts in the development of new child restraints. So, if you're planning on using your sports toy as a regular family holiday vehicle, you'll need to remedy the lap belt issue. A way to solve this problem is to discuss the issue with your car owners club. Other sports car owners may suggest appropriate lap belt approved car seats currently on the market. Also, some cars were sold in various markets with lap belts but in other markets, the same cars were sold with three point safety belts. Often the cars were created with fixing points for both lap belts and 3 point harnesses, so all you need to do is get your hands on some Approved European safety belts and have them fitted (or do them yourself if you’re capable). Nissan is a good example, both the 300zx and the 200zx have fixing points in the rear for the three point safety belts and these work well with car seats such as the Maxi Cosi Tobi and Maxi Cosi Priori.
