Choosing Between Baby Car Seats

There are so many baby car seats to choose from and getting it right is essential.

If you are uncertain as to which type of safety seat your child needs, check out our Car Seat Table that clearly defines the correct age/weight requirement for the different types available for purchase in the UK.

Checklist

  • Forward facing, rear facing, or two way facing (can be fitted either direction)
  • Alternative seat belt router - more than one way to belt it in securely, good for cars with short belts
  • Seat belt tensioner - an addtional mechanism that tightens the baby car seat into position once it is fitted by increasing the seat belt tension
  • Does it fit your car (some convertibles have tiny back seats)
  • Easy to fit and remove? Make sure you can do it yourself! You won’t have the shop attendant with you in the future and you never know when you might want to move it or clean it
  • Adjustible seat position, really useful option to help baby sleep when driving
  • One pull harness adjuster with level indicator. A colour change indicator is great way to know that your precious bundle is strapped in tight enough
  • Car seat travel system instead of dedicated car seat? Health professionals recommend that babies don't spend extended periods sleeping in their car seat, it is much better for them to sleep flat
  • Removable, washable cover
  • Hood for shade

See our explanation of the UK Road Safetly Regulations and Exceptions for child restraints in motor vehicles.

It is illegal to carry a child in rear-facing baby car seats in the front of a car, in which there is an active frontal airbag.

In all cases it is the driver's legal responsibility to ensure that the child is correctly restrained.

TOP TIP

Check out the rules for the country you are travelling. The laws vary around the world. No point in dragging your car seat half way around the world to discover it is substandard by their rules.

If you hire a car, you should be able to hire a regulated seat. For example NZ require Isofix seats, where the seat is secured to the car chassis as well as with the seat belts.
